Charlie's right:  The rod is not bent or broken, it's merely disconnected from the piston rod of the Alco 12-inch power reverse gear used on these locomotives.  See the attached view showing the properly connected linkage.  Also, the view likely dates to early 1951, as the attached view of the same locomotive in dead storage at Clyde on July 1, 1951, finds the right cylinder head cover removed and placed atop the stack to prevent water, birds and the like from entering.  (This view appeared in the Bulletin on the S-4s.)  The 4004, assigned to the LaCrosse Division in the 1950-55 period, returned to service when business picked up and was outfitted with cab signals in May 1953, getting the big apparatus box up on top of the boiler.

I have my emails grouped by sender in an effort to go through a week’s worth of emails, so this may have already been answered, but it looks like the Power Reverse is disconnected from the linkage.
