The Savanna Army Depot was a huge 13,062-acre installation located about 11 miles north of Savanna. It was closed in 2000 and currently has three ex-Army RS4TC locomotives (now lettered for Riverport Railroad) and part of it is being used as an industrial park (the Savanna Depot Park). Considering the depot's size and number of locomotives I would have to believe there was a huge amount of traffic into and out of the depot in the late 1960's.
Can anyone provide any insight into how much traffic was going in and out of the depot in the late 1960's? Was it mostly boxcars? (It appears there is a huge area of bunkers in the depot for ammo storage.) Was there a dedicated wayfreight from Savanna to the depot or was it switched by the pickup out of Savanna?
Thanks in advance,
