Michael,

I am sorry to see the remains of the old tower go, but not surprised. With all of the recent signaling and track changes in the area, it no longer had a function. As a kid and young adult growing up in DG, the tower was a familiar sight. Here is a little older view of the tower when it was very much active and manned. I believe this photo, taken by my late father, was shot between 1938 and 1940. The train, of course, is the eastbound Denver Zephyr.

The BNSF has started demolishing what's left the old Q tower in Downers Grove. It's been just a half floor stump for a number of years housing signal switching gear. Here are some photos of it from the BN days:
