The first use of the terms “Lines East – Lines West
has been discussed on several occasions”. In Engineering News of
July 1904 is the following –
We are informed by Daniel Willard. 2d Vice-Pres., that the
following changes went into effect on the 1st inst.:
The lines of this company will be operated as two Grand
Divisions, to be known as Lines East of the Missouri River, and Lines West of
the Missouri River, each being under the jurisdiction of a general manager.
The lines east of the Missouri River will be subdivided into three districts,
designated as Illinois District, Iowa District, Missouri District, each of
these districts to be under the direction of a general superintendent, who will
report to the general manager of that grand division. The Illinois District
will he subdivided into five operating divisions, to be known as the Chicago
Division, Aurora Division, Galesburg Division, Beardstown Division, La Crosse
Division. The Iowa District will be subdivided into three operating divisions,
to be known as Burlington Division, Ottumwa Division, Creston Division. The
Missouri District will be subdivided into four operating divisions, to be known
as Hannibal Division, Brookfield Division, St. Joseph Division, Centerville
Division.
The grand division west of the Missouri River will be subdivided into five
operating divisions, as now, to be known as Lincoln Division, Wymore Division,
McCook Division, Alliance Division, Sheridan Division.
