In the production of cement a large volume of coal is burned to heat the rotary
kiln. The ash and clinkers that resulted from this process were loaded into
the drop-bottom gons that were so plentiful on the Q. The La Salle switch
engine would make one or two trips, daily, up to Marquette to pull loads and
spot MT's. Several times weekly we would bring the ash laden gons down to the
river and spot them at the facility you mentioned. The ash was trans loaded to
barges and shipped to locations unknown to me. This was a regular feature of
the La Salle switch engine's chores.
