The production of cement requires a considerable amount of heat. The Marquette kiln was coal fired and produced large amounts of ash and clinkers. These ashes and clinkers were loaded into the ubiquitous drop-bottom Q gons for transport to the trans loading facility that you mentioned. The La Salle switch engine usually made two trips to Marquette, daily, and would bring the ash laden gons down to the river. qman |
