Looking through old issues of Locomotive Engineers Journal, I found a number of interesting old photos. The first is Rockford, Rock Island & St Louis #1 The Pioneer (LEJ 1906 volume 40 page 475) built in July 1869 by McKay & Aldus of New York, and it was delivered to the railroad by boat at Beardstown. The short history is that the RRI&StL was leased to the Burlington in, and operated from, 1876 until 1899 when it was deeded to the CB&Q. The second photo is of CB&Q #16 (LEJ 1906 volume 40 page 476) built by Sheffield, Danforth & Cook. The third photo is also #16 (LEJ 1908 volume 42 page 469) but not necessarily the same engine. I haven't looked at the history of these. Another one from a predecessor road is Quincy (LEJ 1906 volume 40 page 1036) identified by Hol as being lettered for Quincy & Chicago Railroad. According to his records, "it was built by Rogers (#595), turned out Aug. 6, 1855, and became CB&Q 69 the next year [when the CB&Q was formed], so the photo was taken in either 1855 or 1856. According to the R&LHS roster, the engine was "Sold to H&StJ by CB&Q and repurchased in 1876. This note from records of H&StJ and may apply to a different engine given the name 'Quincy' by H&StJ. Records of CB&Q show an engine built in 1875 for which there is no further record." Just to add to the mystery, the Quincy & Chicago wasn't incorporated until February 1857, being the new name for the Northern Cross Railroad (which didn't commenced operations until January 1856), and the Q&C was operated from May 1857 by the CB&Q. The loco could have been ordered / operated by Northern Cross between August 1855 and February 1857, and relettered "Q&C" between February and May 1857, but it was supposed to be CB&Q 69 by then. Perhaps it was labelled for Q&C even though it had been transferred to CB&Q as a way of retaining the corporate identity. The screen print photos are not very good so you can go to http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/005877107 then select the volume and page if you want to look at the originals and try to improve them. Just about all the Brotherhood's Journals from 1867 to 1922 are available at Hathi, and contain (even 20 years later) some interesting commentary relating to the 1888 Burlington strike. Unfortunately only a few contain useful photos. Rupert Gamlen Auckland NZ
