Tim, Working a smoking car was brutal for a non smoker. Probably heaven for a smoker as he didn't have to buy tobacco to get his nicotine. On the dinkies brkmn/collector jobs were specifically listed as middle and rear. If you didn't want to work a smoker you bid the middle collector of a job. One of my cousins husbands has told me he almost quit his job at Continental Bank in Chicago because he couldn't take the smoke the first few days he commuted until his boss explained to him to sit in the middle of train. I used to hate working a smoker as my uniform would smell for days. After a couple years I had enough sets that I could rotate them and let them air out. I started segregating them so I had smoker sets when called for the rear or Condrs spot on dinkies. Sometime in the future there will be a full article on mail, baggage and express service on the dinkies that really has been forgotten over the decades. It was far more than newspapers. Its written just waiting for a publication slot.
