Joe: A source would be the CB&Q train briefs that BRHS had reprinted several years ago but are no longer available from the Society. Cicero was a marvel to watch. Those folks could and did put ten pounds into a five pound bag every day. If I remember the numbers correctly Cicero had to turnover it's car inventory twice a day. Before the UP built the new yard at North Platte, Cicero built at least a dozen groups for the UP. Cicero also built a Twin Cities train (No.97) blocked 1. GN, 2. Waycar 3. NP 4. Waycar, 5. Dayton's Bluff (local, other lines, etc.) 6. Waycar. When 97 got to Daytons Bluff, the local guys got on the road power, broke the train between blocks 2 & 3 and went to the GN at Union Yard. Another crew got on with
local power and delivered blocks 3&4 to the NP. A third crew switched up the shorts. The waycars that went to the GN and NP were returned in their transfers to the Bluff. Traffic was pretty evenly divided. There were three trains to the Twin Cities, Two to Denver, two to the UP at Grand Island, and two to Kansas City. Eastbound interchanges were pretty much "mine run" but at one time or another there were NYC Elkhart blocks and PRR Conway blocks. Interchanges were generally twice a day to the PRR, NYC, GTW, Erie, Wabash, NKP while B&O was via BOCT and the C&O, as well as other lines, was via the BRC. The IHB got some eastbound traffic but that's another story. I was curious about what classifications showed the most volume and what were the main classifications for western destinations. I also wanted to know about locals or wayfreights that operated out of Cicero during this same time period. For example, were the RR warehouses near the yard handled by locals, or were they just take care of by yard jobs due to their close proximity to the yard? Thanks for your help, Joe
