Not an expert on this topic, but I understand the first Zephyr with E units in an elephant style configuration was the new overnight Vista Dome "American Royal Zephyr" in 1953. Westbound an E and the through coach and pullman to St. Joseph MO split from the Kansas City loco and cars at Brookfield, MO. The operation reversed with the eastbound run.
