Rich et al

Even though I said it was 49...I'll go with 1945  for my trip Hamburg to Langdon...I was very young then...As in the case of the Dome on DZ I did make the actual trip and it was on the original dome car...Give me credit...I did get the name right.

As I asked before....do we know when the Silver Dome began its "try out" trips around the system and where the car actually ran during it's promotional tours.

I am repenting in "Sackcloth and Ashes"

Pete

Pete,

You're digging yourself a deeper hole...  The Silver Dome entered service July 23rd, 1945.

Steve and Steve

You ( Steve L.) may have partially restored my credibility, but I'm not  ready to DIE for the dome part of the 48' Denver-Lincoln DZ account but the trip home from a summer session at Cheley Colorado Camps in 1948 is without dispute.  I was there in 47 and 48...In 47 my grandfather accompanied me to Denver on the Exposition Flyer and my parents drove out to Colorado in their new 47 Chevrolet and we visited a few "tourist places" on our way home...BTW...my family didn't believe in vacations.  During my "growing up years" that was the only "vacation" we ever took.

In 48  my GF took me out in his new  HUDSON PICKUP...I came home on the DZ for sure...In fact a classmate of my sister happened to be on the train which "cements" that part of the memory.

As supplement to this  little vignette...Does anyone have the "routes" the original dome car (Wasn't the name SILVER DOME) ran during the "try out period" in 1949...Seems like I saw it once upon a time

Pete

You may actually have ridden a dome on the DZ. Didn't they substitute new cars for the CZ in 1948 for DZ consists being taken out of service for refurbishing? Or am I remembering wrong? I thought of that after I posted though I wasn't sure,

Steve...could it be possible that I could be a victim of that saying I once heard..."It's awful to have a good story ruined by a "gang of ugly facts".   I did ride the DZ in '48 from Denver to Lincoln...that is a fact...the dome car "add on" may not be.

HOWEVER:  I do have an indisputable memory of my Grandfather taking my cousin and me from Rock Port to Hamburg, IA to ride the first dome car from Hamburg to Langdon...IIRC the first dome car.....was "tried out" with some trips around the system in 49...so that would be my first dome car experience....Whatever year it was it was in the summer time and that ride did take place.

Are you sure about the date?  The DZ did not have dome cars until November of 1956.

Thanks for posting that one Hol...I had my first..and only...ride as a paying passenger on the DZ from Denver to Lincoln in 1948...I had been to camp near Estes Park that summer...my grandfather took me out via the Exposition Flyer...I remember getting to stand out on the observation car platform somewhere between Ft. Morgan and Denver.

We came back on Busses to Denver after my camp period was over and those in charge saw that we got on our trains in proper manner.  I went immediately to the Dome car and rode there all the way to Lincoln.  "Just so ya know"..I was 12.

Reason I said.."as a paying passenger"...I was flagman on second section of the DZ (running with green signals) as Second No. 1 from Lincoln to Hastings...summer 1956.

My other most memorable "Pay trip" was as brakeman on the Pioneer Zephyr running as Train 44 from Lincoln to St. Joe..June 1958.

Can't do that stuff anymore...Great memories for me.

Pete

[Attachment(s) from HOL WAGNER included below]
When I came to Denver in 1949 we lived for a time in a downtown hotel on 17th Street, and one of my strongest memories is of the illuminated and animated Denver Zephyr sign on the attached postcard.  The sign was a mixture of neon and incandescant bulbs that blinked off and on is rapid succession to give the impression the Zephyr was at speed.  There was a similar sign a block or two away for the Rocky Mountain Rocket, with an E6 on the point.  In this postcard view the streetcar tracks are gone but trolley buses are still in use, which dates the scene to between June 1950, when the last streetcars ran, and 1955, when the trolley buses were replaced with diesel buses.
