Costello Tower was written up complete with photo in Zephyr No. 35 1-97
Wooden clapboard tower opened Dec. 28, 1898 to protect the Iowa Central(M&StL) crossing in Monmouth, Ill 13 Lever interlocker and being at MP 179(from Chicago) was named Tower 179 At unknown date tower renamed Costello Tower after long-time employee James L. Costello who worked in Monmouth retiring as Yardmaster in 1937 after 53 years. Replaced by a machine in the depot Aug. 20, 1955 and tower razed in the middle of Sept 1955. Tower sign in collection of Warren County Historical Society The machine was still in the depot when I use to stop in to talk with agent in '84 after being moved to Galesburg DS office Nov. 30, 1983. But the big dummy never took his camera. I believe it was removed in 1955 when a new Interlocking plant was installed in the ticket office.
