This coming Saturday and Sunday (June 8 and 9) the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinios, is hosting RPO (Railway Post Office) Days. Former RPO Clerks will be at the Museum to "make another catch" of a mail pouch from a moving train. Until six years ago, each of these Clerks had not made a catch for forty years and more. While RPOs remained into the 1970s, most RPO runs ended in the late 1960s. Two catches will be made on each run of the Coach Train using 97 year old CB&Q RPO/baggage 1923. Between runs, visit the RPO car to see where all then operations of the back room of your local post office were conducted in a 30 foot compartment by four Clerks. Speak with former Clerks as they explain the work they performed - the best job they ever had. In the Exhibit Car, an RPO exhibit includes photos taken by Clerks who worked the Chicago & Council Bluffs RPO. Come out to IRM to see catches being made. While at the Museum, take rides on our mainline and our streetcar loop. Stroll through our yards and barns to see our passenger cars, diesels, interurbans, street cars, steam engines, and freight cars. Visit www.irm.org for more information. Please excuse the cross posting of this announcement. Jon Habegger ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
