In another on-line group Paul Dobbs' posting about the Railroad and Locomotive History Society's magazine, Railroad History led me to wonder if forum members are aware of another important publication of that society--an electronic, online copy of the new "Antebellum American Railroad 1830-1860 Compendium" by Thomas T, Taber III. This work is an encyclopedic compilation (760 pages in all) of all major published information about this earliest period of US railroad history, including references to key sources such as Von Gerstner, the American Railway Journal, etc. Organized by state and companies, it provides a wealth of detail not only about corporate history but engineering, equipment, timetables, and operation as well as featuring lots of drawings and photos obtained from the RLH archives and other collections, many of which have not been published elsewhere. Like the works of John H. White, Jr., this is a classic you will want for your own collection. See for yourself at: http://rlhs.org/Reference/antebellum.shtml The State of Missouri starts on page 346 and for me provides a unique insight into the locomotive equipment in use during the Civil War including a picture of the H&StJ "Missouri".
