Rich,

Nickel Plate did an R-1 but they were gone by the thirty's. The G-8 ( Oriental ) was a rebuild from R-2's, but to do a reversal on that (G-8 to R-2) you would need to add a Belpair firebox and other major changes.

But I too would like to know how to make a passable  R-4 or R-5.

If one were going to try to build a Q type Prairie, is there a good starting point - either in brass or plastic?  I know Dave Beck built a beautiful model,  but he was the consummate craftsman.  He probably started with a pile of metal!
