It's been nearly 60 years since I've strung a train order Y frame but I think I did it like this.  The two ends of a string were brought together and overlaped then each end was tied with an overhand knot or half hitch around the string like the first photo.  Then tighten the knots like the 2nd photo.  Then pull the string to bring the two knots together like the 3rd photo.  The the string is now a closed loop that is strung on the Y frame.  To use, pull the two loose ends to open as shown in photo 2, put the folded train orders with clearance in the loop and pull the string to close the loop.

Does anybody have a diagram of how to tie the slip loop on a order string that held the train order ??
