Packin' and FIRE !! There was a gentleman, who is no longer with us, while brakin' on the Congo (Congress Park Tabulated Wayfreight) did as his "boss" instructed him to do at Cicero. "Get the stove goin", NOW" !! This gentleman employed the age-old trick of startin' the waycar stove in a HURRY by "borrowing" the oil-soaked packin' from one of the boxes on their waycar. With the film of oil remaining on the journal the four mile trip to the park would pose no threat to the bearing. THAT was probably a safe bet, had they gone IN at the park ! For some reason the DS got word to the Congo to head straight for Downers, not stopping at the Park. While the four mile trip might have gone without incident, that "film of oil" was no match for the TWELVE mile trip to Downers. On the way, there WAS and incident. Everybody and the waycar survived. It took a long time, however, for the Brakeman to out live the comments that "poped up" occasionally. Karl ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
