About a hunnert years ago (late 50's) a Snuffy set out a blazin' hotbox at Montgomery, across from the tower and west of Webster St. X'ing.  I can only assume they pulled the burning packin' out, tied 'er down and left.  Either the dust collar had caught fire and wasn't noticed or, the wood floor of the freezer had already begun to burn.  In either case, some time later, the entire car became engulfed in flame and burned everything but the steel frame and sides.

Decomposing flesh produces a stench that is disgusting and hard to forget.  It has, however, NOTHING on the stench of nearly 20 tons of burnt lettuce, the commodity with which the car had been loaded.

Much later I was told the car had been moved down the Fox River Branch and "disposed" of.  Probably in or around Yeagan Pit.
