Read "A History of the CB&Q Illinois Pea Vine  The Galesburg to Savanna Branch" By R. W. Linroth
When you made a trip up the Pea Vine from Galesburg to Savanna you changed mileposts account the many segments of track from many companies joined together.  Page 22 is an illustration with a page from timetable #4  a trip from Rio to Alpha 5.59 miles and the milepost for Rio is 12.96 while Alpha is 216.16 or the difference of about 203 miles.  It use to be great fun to try and figure out where to put up the slow orders as a Dispatcher

I think you mean nearest hundredth of a MILE, John.
1/10th mile is 528 ft and 1/100th of a mile is 52.8 ft so these MP locations are 0 to 52 ft from the actual location. Where I worked (Sheridan) it appeared that the designation was the lowest 1/100th of a mile. Additional decimal places were just dropped. For instance if the east end of the bridge or whatever was at MP 705.238 its location would be specified as 705.23 not rounded up to 705.24
