Hello dcm (who did not sign his post) -
The recent (2005) paperback book The Pioneer Zephyr from the Museum of Science & Industry (Chicago) has some clues.
The Pioneer Zephyr was built by Budd in Philadelphia and was on display there at the Broad Street Station of the Pennsylvania Railroad April 17th through the 19th, 1934. A report from Railway Age magazine dated April 21, 1934, says - in part - "Proceeding from Philadelphia, the train will visit principal cities of the Middle Atlantic and New England states before turning westward for visits to Middle Western points and thence to Burlington System and Pacific Coast tours."
The train had 109,000 visitors in New York City April 23-24, 1934, and was in Boston on April 26 and Schenectady, New York on April 28. It was clocked at 100 mph on the Reading RR through Weston, New Jersey. The train got to Chicago on May 10 after some very fast running on the Pennsylvania Railroad.
The Boston & Maine Railroad ordered a near-duplicate train, the Flying Yankee, for Boston-Portland-Bangor service, which entered service in 1935. This train more closely matched the 9901 and 9902 on the Burlington. PAW
