Hi Mitch..... Cast iron car wheels have holes in them too, they are on the back side where you can't see them. Most cast car wheels had a hollow "donut shaped" section around the hub. The hollow helped to keep the cross section of the metal uniform. The holes are mostly to allow the core that creates the "donut hole" to be broken up and removed after the casting has cooled. Rolled steel wheels don't have the hollow section, the plate is curved instead. I've posted a photo of the wheel that came apart on me at the east end of Osage, Wyo (MP-535+/-) and broke the South rail 54 times before a chunk of the wheel hit the air hose and busted the joint to put us in Emergency.
