My wife's ancestors came from the same part of the world yours did, So I'm very familiar with how many of them  "Americanized" their names and spelled them diffeently even within their own family.  Her Maiden name was Sicner..which, she always said is German, but among her ancestors are Pomazls, Shrajans's  Blaha's,  Her mother's Maiden name was Cudly...Even her mother's own siblings spelled it different ways..some  Chudly..some Cudley...som Chudley.  Her grandmother on her mother's side name was Nejdl.

I always marveled at the pronunciation of those Czech names without vowels...ie Trz, Vrb, Brt.  There were given names lik  Alois, Bohumel,  Laddie,

The Czech accent among those who grew up in Czech communities was unmistakable...I got so I could "spot em' as soon as they opened their mouth to speak.   I think I appreciated her Czech heritage more than she did....

Leo - Very interesting. In my dad's papers, he has a typewritten seniority list. Some of the hire dates on his copy also date back to the 1880s. C.J. Miller, always "Chuck" (for Charles) to my dad, was a close personal and railroad friend to dad all his life. I remember Mr Miller as a long time Aurora Division Supt. C.W. Ebers, always "Charlie" (for Charles) to my dad, was another good friend as they both had started out in train service together with dad having one day of seniority over Charlie. Incidentally, your list has my dad's name misspelled (and that is not uncommon). The correct spelling is M.L. (for Marvin Louis) Zadnichek, no "check." There's another side of my dad's family who spelled the surname with an "e," Zednichek. They were all C&NW or M&SL people. Over the years, Zadnichek has ended-up being spelled a couple of different ways. Always interesting - Louis

Verne,

I have a complete list of Aurora Div train personnel seniority lists from 1926-46 and some earlier and many later years. These list men in the craft by hire date. These lists show men with hire dates in the 1880s up to the year they were issued.

I checked trainman and switchman ranks for 1936-1944 w/o finding anyone with the surname of May listed. Are you sure Ralph May was a trainman ?

I have some engineers senioirty lists on paper from the 50s and 60s but they are packed away so I was unable to check for August May.

Of interest to others on this group I did find :

Miller,C.J 9-2-24
Zadnicheck,N.L. 10-26-36
Ebers,C.W. 10-27-36

all of whom became company officers.

Leo
