Here's a comment regarding 9105 which shows assigned Villisca-Shambaugh on the 1/10/52 list and thence to Hastings-Huntley on the 2/5/52 assignment. and no further locomotvie assigned to Villisca - Shambaugh.

Here's why and how I know...On Friday July 13, 1951 Jim Christen and I made our first Overnight trip in the series of summer excursions which we came to call "Q its".  BTW...who knows what is particularly significant about that July 13 1951 day.  Our trip involved a ride from Corning, MO to Villisca, IA via train 93.  As a hint to the significance of that particular day we had only the engine and warcar (Coach 3537) out of Corning??

At Clarinda I noted a center cab unit with an old wood baggage car sitting at the depot.  I don't recall whether he had cars or not..As we headed on to Villisca on 93 I could see a headlight of a train following us into Villisca.  The Timetable shows that in addition to trains 93-94 operating Corning-Villisca round trip 6 days there was an additonal train..I think it was shown as 98-97 operating between Villisca and Clarinda.

At this time (1951) trains 93-94 were still handling pouch mail between Villisca and Corning and points in between.  This mail came off Chicago-Omaha train 15 and maybe even 29..fast mail and also probably some mail out of Omaha via No. 8 or perhaps other night eastbound trains.

Because of the mail situation it was necessary that 94 make the Connection at Corning with trains 20 and 27, hence there would not be time to do the station switching at Clarinda which had several industries served by rail in those days.

It was the mission of trains 97=98 to travel from Villisca - Clarinda leaving Villisca about 11:00am..to Clarinda to do the station switching and handle the "side trip" to Shambaugh.  Thence follow Train 93 back to Villisca in the late afternoon.

Sometime in late 51 or early 52 the mail came off many branch line mixed trains and was moved by "Star Routes".  Therefore there was no hurry or need for the Villisca-Corning 93 to make the mail connection at Corning for the mail..Threfore trains 97-98 came off at that time and hence there was no further need of a center cab at Villisca and hence the Assigment for 2/6/52 shows nothing of a locomotive assigned to Villisca-Shambaugh since the assignment no longer existed.

I'll await answers with someone of a "historical bent" to tell us the significance of Friday July 13, 1951.  The fact that Train 93 had no freight consist out of Corning is a hint.

Pete

Subject: [CBQ] Centercab Assignments

In regard to my last post about the 44-tonner pilot plow, the assignment of all the Q centercab diesels, from a monthly mimeographed "Assignment of Diesel Switch Engines" is quite interesting:

Unit        1/10/1952 Assignment            3/6/1952 Assignment

9103       Red Oak-Griswold                  Chariton-Indianola
9104       Chariton-Indianola                 Monmouth Yard
9105       Villisca-Shambaugh               Hastings-Huntley
9106       Atchison                               Atchison
9107       Superior Yard                       Superior Yard
9111       Monmouth Yard                    Galesburg Tie Plant
9120       Burlington Yard                     Burlington Yard
9122       Havelock Yard                       Havelock Yard
9123       Leavenworth                         Leavenworth

Anyone want the assignment of a particular unit for either of these dates?

Hol
