This one should be of particular interest to Pete. It's a June 29, 1951, letter from C.E. Melker (SMP, Lines West) to Lincoln master mechanic C.E. Bloom and was sent under the heading, "Use of Small Engines -- Wymore-Lincoln Divisions."
"Your letter of June 27, file 530.01, about questionof overhauling engine 904.
"Have analyzed our power requirements on the Wymore-Lincoln Divisions and figure we could get by with the small power we have without overhauling engines 632 and 904 as follows:
"Engines 901, 910 and 915 to be used on the Concordia to Tecumse-Hebr. City local. Put the 954, now at Wymore, onthe Hastings-Huntley job, and in addition leave the 2567, 2581, 2591 and 2594 to be used on Edgar-Holdrege and Fairmont-Helvey assignments. This will leave you at Lincoln for landling the lines north of Aurora, the 955, 960, 961 and 967.
"Please advise if the above will not work out."
The 632 was a K-2 Ten-Wheeler, while the 901, 904, 910 and 915 were K-4s and the 954, 955, 960, 961 and 967 were K-10s. The four 2500s were P-5, P-6 and P-6-A Atlantics with 64" or 69" drivers that made them suitable for branchline use. The goal here, obviously, was not to shop a steam locomotive unless absolutely necessary.
