I remember reading a story in RAILROAD about a hobo finding one of these "funnels" as a warm place to sleep...
IIRC the story correctly the bum went from slumberland directly into a parboiled condition when the first "blowdown" occurred.

Attached is the 1948 Model Railroader piece on the steam blowoff funnel at the C&S Seventh Street roundhouse in Denver. This one was built around 1920 and was apparently one of the earlier installations, before the design had fully developed. It features a curving metal hood on top to direct the steam. All the Q ones I've seen appear pretty much identical, and the attached image of the one at the Q's 23rd Street roundhouse in Denver is perhaps the best view I've found. They slope like a funnel on all four sides and have no hood on top. The construction is all wood (except for the steel bars across the open intake area) and they were painted mineral red, with the steam eventually causing the paint to loosen and come off the wood, leaving a weathered gray wood finish.
