Tank cars in company service & scale test cars tended to be the oldest
equipment on any RR inc. the Burlington. The Q used both revenue cars that
were downgraded to company service as well as some new purchases back 'in the
day'. Generally very few RR's bought new tank cars then or now resulting in
nearly all being privately owned until sold 2nd hand to a RR for MoW use. BN
was fairly agressive in repainting GN/NP/Q MoW equipment into its mineral red
scheme except for the oldest equipment that they anticipated would soon be
retired. Thus a few Q MoW tank cars did get BN paint (sometimes the reporting
marks & 200000 series # was masked off so there was still an orange' block on
either side).
The Burlington utilized old steam loco tenders as well as tank cars for potable
water, fuel oil, etc - water cars were painting orange, non-water were black
(good to know when hooking up a bunk car or taking drink from the spigot on
lower side).
As Ken mentioned, both Q & BN put reporting marks/car number on center sills of
older equipment. This was also true of repainted revenue freight cars for BN
so at a glance carmen would know whether it was former GN/NP/Q equipment and
thus know the little idiosyncrasies of servicing same.
As was pointed out, the original use of multi-compartment tank cars (anywhere
from 2 to 6) goes back to the day when motor oil was shipped in bulk so one
compartment might have 20 weight, another 30 weight, etc.
DuPont & other chemical companies also use multi-compartments for smaller qty
ingredients. Even some semi-truck tank trailers are multiple compartment for
the same reason. The slides I took of Q tank cars have 1, 2 & 3 compartments
with the singles being by far the majority. Most were orange (water) but some
black with diesel, kerosene, weed killer, etc. Gerald
