My 2 cents worth: (still absorbing it!)
Randy Danniel's epic work, Burlington Waycars, appeared to be the final word
on the subject but lo & behold we now have an accompanying drawings book. While
maintaining the high standards of the very best paper stock & reproduction as
it predecessor, it is geared for the modeler. A whopping 11" x 17" that folds
flat due to the superior Plastikoil binding, allows the HO & O scale drawings
to be easily transferable to the modelers' bench. Over hundred and twenty
shar-p photos provide clarity as do the added remarks and notes from multiple
sources.
Like its big brother, the Burlington Waycars Drawing book relies on many
contributors; over fifty including several museums and historical societies. I
noted that among the contributors are at least seven noted Burlington
enthusiasts who have done their own books on other facets of the Burlington:
Corbin, Douda, Ehernberger, Glick, Goen, Holck and Martin. The 'new' drawings
were provided by such names as Julian Cavalier, Frank Ellington, Bill Kerka, J.
Harold Geissel, Charlie Vlk and CB&Q Historical Society Charter members Jack
Karnes and Bill Glick. The latter made this a true labor of love, using his own
expertise from his Burlington Heavyweight Passenger Car trilogy as well as his
Burlington Business Car Drawings book. Bill's drawings truly represent the soul
of many corporate drafting departments. (like Randy, his Dad worked for the Q)
The result is that any owner of this incomparable volume accesses unique
modeling data for more than 30 different CB&Q waycars, five Colorado & Southern
and eleven Fort Worth & Denver. Details are included too with the many archival
CB&Q drawings joined by new drawings as needed for lettering, painting, trucks,
lamps, stoves, fire buckets, etc etc. Every permutation is drawn: 20' bobbers,
transfer, southern Illinois side-braced, steel-plated, three different
side-door versions, CW's, dynamometer, narrow gauge, etc. Generally both sides
are shown in HO & O scale as well as both ends.
Even if one is not a modeler, the concise renumbering data of 14 predecessor
roads representing 350+ waycars provided by Rupert Gamlen is a great resource.
(AMAZING what a Burlington fan in New Zealand can do for us!)
A major short-coming of most railroad books of a technical nature is the
authors' failure to reach out and access as many sources as possible to gain
optimum clarity and accuracy. Randy has avoided that pitfall despite his own
ample resources. Coupled with the fact that the Drawings book is possibly the
most limited edition Burlington book extant, owners will also have made an
excellent financial investment*.
