I believe that the Pioneer Zephyr heavily influenced the design of the E unit nose.  The cab was elevated to the position of the UP City power cars and that yielded the carbody design.   Some of the earlier attempts were more UP-ish; lucky the Zephyrs provided a better basis for the early Es.

Is it just me or does the nose of the E5 have the same angle of slant as the nose of the Pioneer Zephry? I had them parked side by side on my layout they sure looked similiar.
