Rich
In the wintertime, the ballast cars(of all classes) were frequently in coal service. There was seasonal shortage of coal cars of all types. The ballast cars were idle since that type of service was confined to warmer months. There are a couple of pictures in BB 35 of ballast cars in coal service. They were also used, to some extent, in sugar beet service.

List,

Excuse my ignorance, but this is about freight...  I have several Challenger HK-50-3 and HK-50-4 Hart Selective Ballast Cars.  They are numbered in the 220000 range so I'm assuming these were strictly for MOW purposes?  Would these cars ever get pressed into revenue service, or were they stricly for spreading ballast in work trains?  Any information available on these cars?

Thanks,

Rich G.
