SP acquired trackage rights on the BN from Kansas City to Chicago sometime back in 1992-1993 as an adjunctive to it's recently acquired Chicago-St. Louis SPCSL route.

UP inherited the trackage rights with the UP-SP merger.

One of the early consequences of this arrangement is the drastic loss of traffic on the Aurora Branch, part of the original CB&Q.
With trackage rights on the BN (and BNSF), cars can now be interchanged at Eola Yard instead of at West Chicago.

when it started, but may have originated as a concession in the BN /
ATSF merger in 1995, although it may predate that point.

>Bill, It has to pre-date the BN/ATSF merger since I have photographed a
few SP trains in the mid 1980's and seen other photos from around then
as well.
