The same used to be said about paper mills, but emission controls have largely solved that problem. Now if researchers could somehow deodorize livestock and their waste, especially in hog confinement facilities, that would indeed be an improvement to the quality of life in Iowa. When the weather is hot and the wind is right (or wrong, depending upon your perspective!), the hog confinement facilities within 20 miles of Iowa City are sometimes detectable to the olfactory senses.
