Sanborn maps are the worst go to for ROW the railroad had their own insurance and I have found numerous times the ROW is incorrect.  Remember Sanborn maps are for the insurance industry and for insurance purposes.  Buildings are dead on.  ALWAYS use a secondary source to reconfirm the ROW such as historical USGS maps.  Available at a full government document library. State Libraries are almost always a full government document library.  USGS is in the process of digitizing them but it will be awhile as they just started.

Sanborn Maps would be another good source of ROW, at least in the developed sections of Galena.

County Atlas books available in local library and historical society local history and genealogy sections also can be very detailed.

Bill,

The Q branch more or less followed the south bank of the Galena River and crossed it on the west end of Galena into the downtown business district. Even today if you know where to look you can find clues of where the ROW was located. I would suggest contacting the Galena HS as they have maps, photos, etc.

On the frt side one of the most carried products was coal into town.
