It would be a white or clear lantern at night. Red at night is harder to see. Fusee would be good day or night. Misc. Info Did you know a fussee will burn underwater(if you ever want to signal a submarine). Useless info to start conversations(or maybe end them on a weird note)..

That said generally at night the signs were passed with a latern when shoving unless it was a long string, or in daylight a fussee would be used,either yellow or red. Also during both day and night when shoving over street crossings most guys put a fussee on the drawbar.
