Minions, all: Noticed some recent posts mentioned Jim Ozment who recently
passed on. Thought I might share one or two of our non-railroad adventures.
Both Jim and I, as well as Bob Richardson were members of the Collector's Club
of Denver in the 80's and 90's. As was the custom at our monthly meeting, the
club had a drawing just as the meeting started. the winner got to pick any item
from a box full of donated, stamps, books, envelopes or supplies that member
had donated. Jim and I were aghast that is faithful dues paying members (he was
only a year in arrears, I was two years behind)as well as upstanding moral
pillars of the club, it was patently wrong that he and and I had never won. Jim
smelled conspiracy, I smelled beer at the cash bar, so we, in the interests of
ethics and the future reputation of the club came up with a sure fire plan. The
secretary had left out an entire pad of tickets for the drawing, about 3" thick
and when the secretary turned his back, I purloined the ticket pad. Jim and I
headed for the parking lot where we began filling out tickets by the score. In
about 15 minutes half of the pad was gone and we thought we had better go back
in or miss the "drawing." On the way in, Jim, due to health reasons went to the
restroom. I, on the other hand, looked for a trash can where I deposited all of
Jim's ill gotten tickets. I figured that this would increase my odds of winning
a hundredfold because there were only about 20 members present. When the
drawing was finally held and the winner was announced, depression hit both Jim
and I like a container train on the Joint Line, neither of us were picked!
Since he already had finished several bottles of rocky mountain spring water,
he was in no mood to hear that verdict, whereupon he stood up and demanded that
the " a judicial committee" be appointed to investigate irregularities, real or
imagined in the process used to select winners of the drawing! Since the
drawing in its entirety consisted of a shoebox and a pad of old drawing
tickets, no one had any idea of what he meant. He then informed that August
body that he was sure that the drawing was rigged becuse "My good friend,
fellow railroad employee and club member in good standing (almost a saint) BOB
M. had filled out nearly 100 tickets and none was chosen! He demanded a
recount, but was shouted down by nearly everyone present except the real winner
of the drawing. I was aghast at his apparent lack of philatelic circumspection
and the failure to show respect me for me, a fellow railroader, stamp
collector and prodigous consumer of local and regional potables. Best regards,
Bob Munshower
