We rode the WP&Y last summer. Rode behind No. 73....I noticed the brakemen "getting on and off moving equipment"
I quizzed one of them, who was pretty knowedgable. Sez they are not subject to FRA rules...Said FRA can only make suggestions, not firm "commands"
It was a great ride..My grandson and I rode the open platform all the way up except for one tunnel when they made us come inside.
It was kind of like the railroading we knew with proper whistle signals and hand signs

Just passing a recent experience. I am just back back from Alaska. If you ever have the opportunity, don't miss a trip on the White Pass and Yukon. I have ridden the Algoma Central, been to Chama and Durango,etc........... as far as scenery nothing compares to the White Pass.
The road is very busy, the day I rode there were 4 trains and 3 met at the summit just inside the Canadian border........two trains did a little saw by move.
