Couldn't agree with you more
The ride starts out flat. Then you see a hint of a scar impossibly high on the side of a mountain and you say "no way is that the RR"...but it is!  And when you get THERE the whole thing happens again!!! 
Built over two years with mostly green non-laborer gold seekers!!
Today the appropriation for government feasibility plan approval would take ten years...

Just passing a recent experience. I am just back back from Alaska. If you ever have the opportunity, don't miss a trip on the White Pass and Yukon. I have ridden the Algoma Central,been to Chama and Durango,etc........... as far as scenery nothing compares to the White Pass.
 
The road is very busy,the day I rode there were 4 trains and 3 met at the summit just inside the Canadian border........two trains did a little saw by move.
