No,the red light came on when the brakes went into emergency and it oscillated. Its main purpose was to warn opposing trains on double track that the train may have jackknifed when it went into emergency. It could also be turned on manually. From: "dfhollis@comcast.net"

Having never seen these locomotives operate, I don’t know if both or only
one of the lights oscillated. If only one, which one? I’m installing a
DCC decoder in early P2K models, and I need to know how to do the Mars lights.
