On the RI at LaSalle St. station it was not uncommon for a backup to "hit the post"..when it happened the vibration literally shook the whole building...It was said that when that happened it knocked the stationmaster's phone off the hook and automatically dialed George Voss's (the Supt) number Pete

Some engineers knew their spot in CUS and you'd never have to do anything. Others would just keep shoving you toward the bump post. And it was "interesting" to see how close some would get. I always seemed to have forgotten gloves when I caught a back-up :(

Just another small addition to the conversation:on the Qs Aurora Div between Chicago Union Station and 14th ST coach yard back up moves were made by a combination of switchman and brakeman. To this day Amtrak uses switchman(trainman) to back trains in when needed.
