One of the highlights of my bicycle ride this morning in the western suburbs of Chicago was looping through St. James Farm and checking on waycar 14351. I was pleasantly surprised this morning to find a few improvements since my last ride through. Stairs have been added to allow convenient access to the inside of the car. Two interpretive signs have been posted outside. One explains what a waycar was and who used it. It also has the details of the construction of 14351 and how it came to be at St. James Farm. The second has the history of the Chicago, Aurora and Elgin interurban line, which has now become the Illinois Prairie Path. St. James Farm, according to the sign, had two stops. One for the farm and a second for tourists
from the city or other suburbs.
It's good to see this waycar has a good home, after the news of the loss of another in Missouri earlier.
St. James Farm is worth a visit not just for the waycar, but the other historic buildings and the walking trails through the woods. It's located at the intersection of Winfield Road and Butterfield Road (Il. Rt. 56) in Winfield.
Happy Father's Day!
