Most but not all Q waycars had those whistles. You are correct that the whistles told the conductor when the brakes released.

Speaking of Waycars, last night I noticed something interesting on 13500.

On the back of the air brake pipe bracket there is a peanut whistle piped to the exhaust port. So whenever the brakes release, the conductor and rear brakeman would hear a TWEEEEEeeeeeeeet.

I've never seen anything like it. Can any Q veterans explain why it's there?

Eric
