Steven Miller:

Regarding your question about location of the signals, most of the signal bridges I have studied had the centerline of the signal mast located directly (or nearly directly) over the right-hand rail of the track they governed, as you viewed the signal.  This placed the target(s) fairly close in line with the engineer.  Regarding the decking, the drawings that I placed in the files showed steel channels supporting the signal masts.  This was because they were drawn from CB&Q standard plans, which by the 1940's had been modified to show the channels.  In reality, most of the signal bridges used the 4 x 12's that Steve Holding talked about to support the signal masts.  And to elaborate a little more on the 2 x 8 floor boards that Steve mentioned, on many bridges these floor boards were not installed across the entire length of the bridge.  Instead, they went from the tower where the ladder was attached only to the farthest signal (or to the panel point just beyond the farthest signal).

Decking for signal bridges was covered by Drawing 69499-A and consisted of 4 X 6 oak stringers across the bridge with  seven 2 X 8 pine 14 foot floor boards  Each signal was mounted on a pair of 4 X 12 oak stringers 7 foot long which were under the pine flooring(no flooring under the signal base)  All wood was treated and the metal was Mineral Red I do not have the date when the bridges were changed  aluminum.  Crossing flashers were painted aluminum with gates black and white until 7/18/72 when the color changed to Red and White.

Subject: [CBQ] Signals Bidge details

Since getting energized by find this group I have a few questions that some of you might know. 1) How and where, beside above the track they were for, was the signal masts attached to the bridge. 2) What was the decking material on the horizontal component of the bridge made of? 3) Was it solid or sectional with gaps between?

Thanks in advance any help I get,

Stephen Miller
