One way I've researched track arrangements is to look at Sanford maps of
the
towns I want to model. The Ottumwa Sanford map is available online at
the
State Library of Iowa, but need to get a library card (free) to access
the
maps. Contact the State Library at 800-248-4483 for information. Small
towns
aren't in the collection, and the maps may not be perfectly correct,
but
they're adequate for modeling purposes. I used Sanford maps for my plan
of
the Burlington yard and the wye at Washington, IA.
Another
resource is Google Earth. I found that I could trace the right of
way from
Burlington to Washington, even though the track was pulled in 1981.
I've
also been able to follow the Q main line from Burlington to Pacific
Jct.
While most of the original track is gone, the right of way is
mostly
discernable.

Ottumwa Depot & track layout in the late 50's
I am modeling the
Ottumwa Depot and area in the late 50's. Having lived in
Ottumwa until I
went to College in '68 I know that the Rock Island track was
the closest to
the depot but there was what I believe to a track that had an
RPO car at
times close to the depot on the west end. Does anyone have the
track layout
of the tracks around the depot including the CRI&P track.
Also
information on the tracks at Market street and the watchman house
and
crossover between the Milw and RI at Market
St.
