I have been digging around and found some maps that might be helpful. Most are different years so you can compare places from the 20s to the 50s and 60s. For whatever reason they are not north south oriented. I was checking out Franklin county Illinois and seeing the railyards and mines in the 20s and then in the 50s. Not too detailed, but its a tool that could be used along with google earth and other maps and books.
