Jeff,
That would make each unit worth approximately $642900. I probably have several EMD price lists, but the one that I can lay my hands on easily was issued January, 1983. For the time period beginning July, 1982 through December, 1983, a new SD40-2 was priced at $894,000. If a trade in was involved, the new locomotive price was reduced to $887,000. This was further offset by the value placed on the trade in. If the trade in model was a four axle F3, F7, GP7 or GP9, the trade in allowance was $36,500 for a net price of $850,500. If a six axle SD7 or SD9 was traded, the trade in allowance was $63,200 for a net price $823,800.
At this date, the SDf40-2 was near the end of it's production run. The top of the line model was the SD50 which was priced new at $1,020,000. A GP40-2 in the same time was $765,800 new and a replacement locomotive price of $760,800 An SW1001 was priced at $581,700. The trade in value of a four axle locomotive on a GP40-2 was $54,100 because more components could be reused, primarily the truck frames. The net price for a replacement GP40-2 was $706,700. Trade ins were accepted on all models except the SW1001.

While not the Q, IIRC, the Rock Island paid $18 million for 18 U30Cs and 10 SD40-2s in 1974. The 1974 annual report had a paragraph about the new power being delivered.  Thanks! Jeff  Jeff Woron
