I sneak thru the Oswego Public Library to the Sanborn Maps They show Dingee north of town while the ice houses I think were down by where the Rt. 47 bridge is now. When did the paper say they burned? It turned cold so sheet rocking has slowed I am still hoping to get out my paint brush and start painting inside by the end of the week. And as soon as they let us move in I know where to start the bench work. Better head to bed Steve From: "qutlx1@aol.com" <qutlx1@aol.com> To: cbq@yahoogroups.com Sent: Mon, January 2, 2012 11:45:27 PM Subject: Fwd: [CBQ] Yorkville Note: Forwarded message is attached.
Thanks Steve for the lead on the Pickling Plant. Thats news to
me. Now if we could just find more info on the button factory(that used fresh
water oyster shells pulled out the adjacent Fox river) and the ice houses
we'd have more info on the early industries.
RR Repetto once told the story of coming into Yorkville
westbound on 85 and upon rounding the curve at the North end of town seeing the
ice houses in flames. The fire dept had all the hoses strung across the track
and 85 couldn't stop in time. The ice houses burnt to the ground.
The Kendall County record recently printed a fairly good
article on Kendall County ice houses in Yorkville and Oswego. One old farmer I
talked with many years ago told of oystering as a kid for the button
factory.
