Thanks Steve for the lead on the Pickling Plant. Thats news to me. Now if we could just find more info on the button factory(that used fresh water oyster shells pulled out the adjacent Fox  river) and the ice houses we'd have more info on the early industries.

RR Repetto once told the story of coming into Yorkville westbound on 85 and upon rounding the curve at the North end of town seeing the ice houses in flames. The fire dept had all the hoses strung across the track and 85 couldn't stop in time. The ice houses burnt to the ground.

The Kendall County record recently printed a fairly good article on Kendall County ice houses in Yorkville and Oswego. One old farmer I talked with many years ago told of oystering as a kid for the button factory.

For those of you(Leo you name came up) who have looked at the most recent Zephyr No. 62 and my article on Yorkville.   You need to get the December copy of RMC on Page 82-89 is a very nicely detailed article on "The pickle industry and railroading" by David Leider.    It talks about the Squire Dingee Pickle Company which had a salting facility in Yorkville.  It shows up on early Sanborn Maps BUT I had nothing on it for the article.  This nice article has all you ever wanted to know about the pickling process.
