Bill,

Prior to the pooling of waycars each Conductor/job had an assigned w/c. It was his to use while on the job.
For crews in mainline pool service,I.E Cicero-Savanna,Cicero-Galesburg the waycar was the "hotel" at the away from home point. Crews slept, prepared and ate their meals in the w/c. There were assigned tracks for w/c's at each terminal and many rules, agreements and understandings of how the w/c's were to be handled. The union grievance files are full of complaints about perceived violations of these agreements by yard crews.

I suppose if a Condr was so inclined he could stay in his w/c at the home terminal as the car would be placed on the w/c track and be undisturbed until his pool turn was called for another trip. A prime example of this on a short term basis would be at Cicero where Aurora based crews would stay in the w/c's until the first westbound dinky. The UTU files in my posession are bulging w/issues on this matter and supplies.

engine crews usually stayed in the bunk room at the roundhouse and didn't mix w/the train crew at the w/c track.

Maybe someday, after many other articles I have in mind, there could be one on assigned waycars for the BRHS. Even the yard transfer crews had assigned w/c's and the complaint files are full also.

Leo Phillipp

can someone explain the reason for the beds and cooking stove in the caboose pictures that hol just posted. did the crew live in the caboose all time and not have any home life? and if the prepared meals did the men on the locomotive get any of the food?
