Andrew Koetz writes-

.... What would it cost to get one of those Winton engines re-built, or both of them possibly?  Or hasn't the Cali State RR Museum ever thought about that.

The fundamental problem is restoring these ancient prime movers to operation is that there are no parts- absolutely none- available for this low-production almost-80 year old diesel that was simply not very successful to begin with.  This stark fact defeated the restorers of the B&M's YANKEE CLIPPER, and although I am not familiar with recent events in that regard, they apparently are planning on substituting a more practical modern prime mover.  Of course, any engine can be restored if time and money is no object, but-   the goal-  just to listen to it-  would be hard to justify.

The CSRM's two engines  (or was one recently given to the IRM?  I am supposed to know these things....) reside well-protected in the former SP Sacramento Locomotive Works erecting shop, and they will certainly be candidates for at least cosmetic restoration for exhibition in the CSRM's forthcoming new Museum of Railroad Technology.
