Doctor Anspach:

Apparently QSI located the last surviving operational Winton 201 on a fire boat on the East Coast. You can read about it at:

QSI has a sound clip at:

I don't know how the Winton 201 sounded, but the QSI sound file is probably much more authentic than the EMD 567 sound file recommended by the other decoder manufacturers for 9900.

The Silver Streak soundtrack file represents circa 1935 sound technology, so it's a poor representation of the true sound of a Winton 201. It was the best sound file available until the new QSI release, and it was available as a free download.

I would invite anyone familiar with the Winton 201 sound to listen to the QSI clip and inform us of it's authenticity. Meanwhile, I suspect that the QSI sound file is the best representation of a Winton 201 that we're going to get, and I'm going to install the new Titan-U with stereo speakers in my Con Cor twin headlight Zephyr.

Subject: [CBQ] Re: QSI Winton 201 Sound Decoder

Perhaps there has been a development of which I am unaware, but to my knowledge there is not a single operable Winton 201/201A engine (such as that in the PIONEER ZEPHYR and FLYING YANKEE)  anywhere, and not likely to be given the absolute lack of parts, so I am curious as to what engine QSI is purporting to represent the PZ 201?  Apparently, there are some operating Winton submarine engines, but none of them are the distinctive 201s.

Preston Cook, the ranking expert on Winton  has an excellent note on the Winton engines at:   http://utahrails.net/loconotes/pcook-winton.php.  It was he who personally warned me of the absence of any operable engines from which to record.  A minor addendum to his note is that there are two other existing 201 Winton engines, the 12 cylinder pair removed from the A unit of the first CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO E-2 A-B-B set.  They reside in the collections of the California State Railroad Museum.

The only known recording of a 201 engine of which I am aware of  is off the soundtrack off of the ancient movie SILVER STREAK.
