Sir:
I regret to report the death of a dome.
The Silver Cup (CB&Q 253, '56 'Chuck Wagon" acquired by Heritage Fleet,
LLC from Les Kasten [repossessed from undisclosed buyer, date unknown]
on 2/1/11, to Vista Dome Corporation on 10/1/11), suffered extensive
fire damage to the dome and supporting structure years ago. A
detailed inspection revealed numerous side and roof stainless steel
support elements warped by the heat and beyond feasible repair. The
camber of the car was gone and economical repair deemed unlikely.
Once determined that she would not return to the rails, she donated her
skirts, trucks, usable dome frames, and roof skin for the rebuild of
other dome cars. She met her fate on 14 Oct 11.
For the record,
